Chiclayo
200 km north of Trujillo (about 3 hours driving) you can find Chiclay with its 625.000 inhabitants. From Chiclayo you can go on an excursion to the tomb of the "Lord of Sipan". Next to Machu Picchu this is the biggest archaeological discovery of the century in Peru.
the Lord of Sipan
In 1987 the Peruvian archaeologist Walter Alva discovered a tomb near the village of Sipan. Because of the enormous amount of wealth, art and numerous persons who were buried alive next to the tomb (a soldier, two assistants, three women, a servant and a child), archaeologists concluded that they had found the tomb of a powerful and important man. They determined that this man from the Moche civilisation was the most important authority; military, religious as well as civil. They gave him the nickname of "The Lord of Sipan".
Partly through this discovery, a picture could be formed about this civilization; its religion and its art. The Moche culture dates from 700 to 100 BC
